inLIMBO
inLIMBO explores the state of "limbo" that many asylum seekers face in temporary accommodations whilst awaiting crucial decisions from the UK authorities about their future.
Through a visual narrative and informative text, inLIMBO highlights past and present lived experiences of people who are neglected, isolated and restricted from participation in mainstream society due to barriers imposed upon them during this state of limbo.
While creating this project, I encountered a skilful community eager to work and contribute to the British economy. But, because of the current immigration system, rooted in the government's policy of creating a "hostile environment" for refugees and migrants, they are mostly denied the right to work. They are forced to rely upon the support of NGOs. They also face being taken advantage of by those who seek to exploit their vulnerability.
Using silk and silk routes as a metaphor, Silvestri highlights the journeys, resilience and skills of this delicate and diverse community of asylum seekers across the UK while exploring how this limbo affects their mental health and well-being.
Commissioned by Counterpoints Arts in collaboration with IMIX and contributors. WaterBear commissioned the first phase of this project.
